About Watchung
The Borough of Watchung occupies roughly six square miles in northeastern Somerset County along the first and second ridges of the Watchung Mountains. The borough was organized in 1926 from part of what was then North Plainfield Township and formally incorporated on May 23, 1926. Its name comes from the Lenni Lenape expression associated with the area's “high hills.”
Watchung is bordered by Warren Township to the west; Green Brook Township and North Plainfield to the south; Berkeley Heights to the north; and Scotch Plains and Plainfield to the east. The borough combines wooded residential areas with a major Route 22 retail corridor and local civic/commercial areas around Watchung Circle, Mountain Boulevard, Stirling Road, Somerset Street and Watchung Avenue.

Getting around
U.S. Route 22 crosses the southeastern part of Watchung and I-78 crosses the northern corner, making the borough convenient to the regional road network. Watchung itself does not have an NJ TRANSIT rail station; residents commonly use nearby stations in communities such as Berkeley Heights, Plainfield, Fanwood, Stirling and other nearby towns depending on destination.
Nearby destinations — outside Watchung
Two attractions are frequently associated with the “Watchung” name but are not inside Watchung Borough. Washington Rock State Park is in Green Brook Township, and the large Watchung Reservation is in Union County. They are worthwhile nearby outings, but NJTGO keeps them clearly separate from in-borough destinations.
